Susmita Sarkar becomes Purdue's first ever Schmidt Science Fellow

When she began her Ph.D. at Purdue in 2018, Susmita Sarkar had no idea of the ups and downs that were to come. But she turned every challenge into an opportunity, and has now become the first Purdue student to be selected for the Schmidt Science Fellows program.

Swimming microrobots achieve record speeds, thanks to microscale 3D printing

A robot traveling at 2 millimeters per second doesn't sound particularly fast. But when that robot is the width of a human hair, it becomes record-breaking! Purdue University researchers created the speedy swimming robots using microscale 3D printing, enabling multi-material microrobots to be fabricated with hydrogel tails that adapt to their environment.

Winning senior design project helps people with neuropathy learn to walk again

A team of Purdue mechanical engineering students have developed a novel system to deal with neuropathy, which causes patients to lose feeling in their feet, making them unable to walk. By attaching sensors to the shoe, connected wirelessly to a band around the leg, users can re-train their brain to "feel" the ground beneath them. The team won the Malott Innovation Awards, given to the best senior design project of the spring 2023 semester.

Reverse osmosis breakthrough will come to life at Purdue

The most energy-efficient theoretical water desalination process is about to level up. David Warsinger, who pioneered a new process called “batch reverse osmosis,” has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to build a pilot project demonstrating its real-world effectiveness.

Mentoring connects students with Purdue ME alumni

Being an engineering student can sometimes feel daunting, as if nobody knows the challenges you’re facing. But alumni have been there, and many are willing to share their experiences with current students. Purdue ME has set up an alumni mentoring program, pairing students with alumni for encouragement, networking, and career advancement.

Supersonic water table enables rapid prototyping for turbines

Testing new designs for jet engine turbines is no easy task. Wind tunnels are large, complicated, and expensive; and building functional prototypes takes a long time. But Purdue University researchers now have an alternative: a water table which simulates supersonic flow, enabling them to quickly test and iterate their designs.

Bursting the computational bubble of liquid-vapor phase change

There is a mysterious moment when liquids turn into vapor, such as when tiny bubbles form in a flowing liquid. Modeling this complex flow requires huge supercomputers, which rely on very specific parameters. Purdue University researchers have pioneered a more efficient mathematical method to model this phase change, reducing the computing power needed and expanding its application to a broader size scales.
