Augmented reality to provide new skills for manufacturing workforce education

Workforce education in manufacturing has traditionally been very low-tech: in-person teaching sessions, one-on-one apprenticeship, written manuals, and perhaps a video. But to keep pace with an increasing skills gap, some manufacturers are now turning to augmented and virtual reality to teach their workers new skills. A Purdue team has entered into a $5 million cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create an augmented and virtual reality experience prototype called Skill-XR.

Pancreatic cancer time machine

Many patients with pancreatic cancer have only about a 10% chance of survival, because they tend to become resistant to chemotherapy. Bumsoo Han has created a microfluidic device to observe pancreatic cancer behavior over time, suggesting a new drug testing approach that could help scientists better catch resistance.

3D cell culturing from a single cell to enable personalized cancer therapies

Cell culturing is a technique used by biologists to conduct research on tissue samples in the lab. Prof. Cagri Savran has successfully demonstrated 3D cell culturing originating from an individually selected cell, showing that it is possible to re-create a cancerous tumor that displays the same characteristics as the original tumor.

Amy Ross showcases the next generation of spacesuit

The first and last people to walk on the Moon were Purdue engineers. The next humans to walk on the Moon will be wearing a spacesuit designed by Purdue engineer Amy Ross (BSME '94, MSME '96). She recently showcased the new xEMU spacesuit, which offers extended flexibility and protection for astronauts to explore the Moon as part of NASA's Artemis program.

Radiative cooling paint

What if paint could cool off a building enough to not need air conditioning? Xiulin Ruan has pioneered radiative cooling paint; instead of absorbing sunlight, it radiates the heat back into space. This actually cools surfaces below ambient temperature, something paint has never done before.
