Purdue Team Wins Outstanding Innovation in Service Systems Engineering Award at IISE Annual Conference & Expo
The project, titled "Breaking the Cycle of Reincarceration: Community Corrections Placement with an MDP Approach" was a collaboration that included Jason Huber, Executive Director of Tippecanoe County Community Corrections, along with Griffin Carter, a master's student in AAE. Faculty members included Daniels School of Business Associate Professor Pengyi Shi, Biomedical Engineering Professor Nan Kong and Clinical Associate Professor of Nursing Nicole Adams.
According to the project abstract, the team used systems engineering and queueing theory to analyze the process flow of the criminal justice system. A user-friendly dashboard was developed that helps users visualize data, recommend placement decisions, and provide strategic justification for the planning of staffing. The team estimates that the use of their proposed policy can reduce recidivism by 28% and technical violations by 46%
