INCOSE approves Purdue Industrial Engineering courses for Academic Equivalencies agreements

The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) is excited to announce that George Mason University and Purdue University have both had courses approved as equivalent to the certification knowledge exam, satisfying one of the requirements toward Associate Systems Engineering Professional (ASEP) and Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification.

Students who do well in university courses which have been assessed to have Academic Equivalence (AcEq) are allowed to bypass the certification knowledge exam when applying for ASEP and CSEP Certification. The assessments they did through their coursework have been recognized by the INCOSE Certification Programs volunteer reviewers as an equivalent alternative to the standardized test developed by INCOSE. Academic Equivalency coursework may be offered in any language.

Professor John Shortle, of George Mason University stated, "The chance for students to secure an ASEPor CSEP qualification, in addition to their degree, is an added incentive to work hard, as it helps them standout in the competitive market place."

Dr.Tugba Karabiyik, who will represent Purdue on the INCOSE Corporate Advisory Board, adds "People in industry want the option to qualify for certification through our online engineering program."

Courtney Wright, INCOSE Certification Program Manager, said, "I am delighted to see the Academic Equivalence program growing. An increasing number of highly-respected universities like Purdue and GMUare using the INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook as a reference in their coursework and are being recognized with Academic Equivalency. This will benefit the global systems engineering community by establishing a baseline of common knowledge that can be translated and applied in a variety of domains and communities."

Members of INCOSEs Academic Council are eligible to offer Academic Equivalency upon recognition by the INCOSE Certification Program. Candidates who apply through AcEq must still meet all other INCOSEcertification requirements, including individual membership and payment of application fees.

Any university wishing to participate in this program needs to be a member of the INCOSE Corporate Advisory Board (CAB) or the local INCOSE chapter equivalent. There are no additional fees linked to securing Academic Equivalence for CAB members. Universities who are members of local chapter affiliates have a low-cost path to participate in the Academic Equivalency program.

Certification is a formal process whereby a community of knowledgeable, experienced, and skilled representatives of an organization, such as INCOSE, provides confirmation of an individual's competency (demonstrated knowledge, education, and experience) in a specified profession.

Certification differs from licensing in that licenses are permissions granted by a government entity for aperson to practice within its regulatory boundaries. Certification also differs from a "certificate" that documents the successful completion of a training or education program.
