“Hidden IE: Systems are Everywhere” was the theme of the 2021 Great Lakes Regional Conference for the Institute for Industrial and Systems Engineers, hosted by the Purdue IISE student chapter. The conference was conducted entirely online with students from countless universities.

Attendees were treated to key note addresses by Tamara Markey, Purdue IE alumna, K-12 STEM education evangelist, and 2019 Indiana Teacher of the Year; and Andre Hughes, also a Purdue alumnus, member of the founding partner group of Accenture, and Founder and Servant at Powered by Action.

Participating students had the opportunity to attend multiple panel events on consulting, early career, and Women in Engineering. Even though the conference was remote, attendees were still able to socialize with other students over a game of trivia.

The session breakouts included:

  • Uncovering Hidden Systems
  • Retail as an IE
  • IEs at Disney
  • Exploring Data Science
  • Case Study Workshop
  • Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace and Beyond
  • TechnologIE
  • Healthcare Engineering
  • Global Engineering
  • Engineering at Conagra

"We have been planning this for about 2 years. In July we decided with Dr. Caldwell to change it to virtual." Sophie Fanok, Purdue IE Senior and IISE Conference Chair, continues, "Originally we had about twelve students working through the planning stages, however we had five students that really helped execute last semester."

Sophie will start a Master's program in June to teach secondary mathematics. "Both my parents and several family members are educators. I tried to get out, but it just came back to me... I am really passionate about helping students learn math."

The School of Industrial Engineering thanks the student IISE chapter, and especially Sophie Fanok and her committee, for their work to “bring” many Industrial Engineers to Purdue.
