EEE Job Corner with Ms. Whelton, PE

If you are looking for summer job opportunities there is still time.  I will continue to send emails about opportunities.

The CCO is a great place to find both full time and internship related opportunities.  I don’t post their opportunities.  If you don’t have a CCO account or haven’t looked at it this semester, please go here.  The jobs tab of LinkedIn is another great way to look for jobs or even using general job search engines.  Don’t forget that research counts as related experience!

The final career fair of the semester is the Just in Time career fair on April 16th from 10am to 3pm. Keep in mind the companies don’t list specific majors of interest and you should look at the entire list.  There are 46 companies attending and looking quickly at the list, there are some companies I know that have hired EEEs in the past:  Abbot and Dana (locally). Positions with those companies are most likely with their environmental health and safety (EHS) groups. In the past, Dana had an EEE intern with their EHS group who then was also able to work during the fall and spring semesters as it fit within their class schedule.  An EEE alum who interned at Abbot worked on life cycle analysis and sustainability initiatives for the company.

Other examples of companies to review and talk with at the fair include Hitachi Asterno, an international company, that has fulltime and intern positions for environmental (might be HSE; see this internship position) throughout the world. I suggest checking the main company site for internships and fulltime and be prepared to talk with the local representatives about these positions if you attend.

American Electric Power is a utility company and has energy and environmental support positions.  Look at these internships.  Keep this process of looking at the main company site for positions as you review other companies attending the fair.

Remember everyone that makes something needs an environmental engineer and now many companies have sustainability initiatives above and beyond regulatory requirements.  I suggest looking at the companies listed that make something or are a preferred location and go to their main company website to view internship and fulltime positions.  For international students, there are six companies that say they have positions. You can filter by citizenship status.  This fair isn’t listed in career fair plus and uses simplicity (under myCCO) so I suggest preparing prior to attending the fair.

Currently there are no other EEE related items on the CCO calendar through the end of the semester, but a company info session could be added.  Keep checking to see if more company specific items are added to the CCO calendar.  If I receive information on job opportunities, I will send them via email.

Need a professional outfit for an interview or EEE’s recognition night on May 1st?  The CCO has a career closet where you can get a professional outfit for free!

Professional Licensure & FE Exam: What is it? When to take it? How to prepare?

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is typically the first step in the process leading to the P.E. license. It is designed for students close to finishing their engineering degree or recent graduates. The FE is a computer-based exam that is administered year-round at NCEES (National Council of Examiners for engineering and Surveying) approved Pearson VUE test centers. FYI – Purdue has an approved test site.  The FE contains 110 multiple-choice questions. The exam appointment time is 6 hours long, which includes a nondisclosure agreement, tutorial (8 minutes), the exam (5 hours and 20 minutes), a scheduled break (25 minutes), and a brief survey.

What is professional licensure all about and why is it important?  Learn more at https://www.nspe.org/sites/default/files/resources/pdfs/GR/2017handouts/2017%20-%20What%20is%20a%20PE%20document.pdf

The EEE website has an information and resource page - click here. This page highlights NCEES, the Environmental Exam, links to various sites to register for the FE, what study sessions are offered on campus (not all apply to EEE, though), how to purchase study guides, and other resources to consider.

EEE FE Exam Reimbursement Program for EEE Seniors

The EEE FE Exam Reimbursement Program is meant to encourage and support EEE students to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam during their time at Purdue. It offers 100% reimbursement with a passing score and 50% reimbursement for a failing score on the FE. Once the student takes the FE, they are to provide proof of their test date and score along with an itemized receipt to Dr. Robinson, nlrobins@purdue.edu. The deadline for a reimbursement request is the last day of the month in which the student graduates. Only one reimbursement per student will be allowed.
