EEE Job Corner with Ms. Whelton, PE

If you don’t have a summer job opportunity there is still plenty of time!   Check the CCO out for positions.  I will continue to email and update opportunities after the semester ends.

I want to congratulate all of you, in particular our graduating seniors-you have had quite an unusual collegiate career, but you have persevered.  Congratulations to those of you who have opportunities lined up following graduation or for the summer.  I know there are some of you who are still looking for opportunities.  You may be tired of applying and not hearing back from companies or sad about the position you didn’t get after a great interview.  Don’t give up-believe in yourself!  If a company isn’t interested in you then it is best you didn’t get the position.

Some things to keep in mind while looking for opportunities that I found on LinkedIn from motivational speaker Brigette Hyacinth:

1.         You can be the best candidate and still not get selected.

2.         If you didn't get the job, it was never meant for you.

3.         You weren't rejected, you were redirected.

4.         Your value does not decrease based upon someone's inability to see your worth.

5.         Believe in yourself and keep trying, the right door will open for you.

“Not getting something you’ve always wanted is a chance to try out something new”. Tim Herrera recently wrote a great article for the NY Times on thinking differently about rejection (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/17/smarter-living/seeing-the-bright-side-of-missed-opportunities.html ).

So don’t give up! There are still plenty of opportunities out there.  Keep applying online, checking and applying to opportunities via the CCO, LinkedIn, and my emails.  I’m here all summer if you need to talk about your resume, opportunities, etc.  We can talk via email, over the phone, through zoom, or you could come to the office.  Come up with backup plans-remember any experience is good experience in regard to internships on your resume.

Forage – Gain Experience via Self-paced Job Simulations

What Is Forage?

Forage offers short, self-paced job simulations created by leading companies across industries such as finance, law, software engineering, consulting, sales, and more. These simulations allow students to experience real-world work tasks, build skills, and gain insights into potential career paths—all at no cost. Forage delivers results: students who use Forage are twice as likely to get an interview and receive an internship or job offer than students who do not use Forage.

How Does Forage Benefit Students?

There are several great benefits for “Foragers,” or students who use Forage’s job simulations. Below are a few:

Job simulations give students exposure at an early stage to experiences that catalyze career interests and help them build skills related to specific roles and companies.

Forage’s open access, “always on” simulations are particularly valuable for underrepresented students who may not have access to career networks or internships.

The Forage platform provides students career-related resources, including resume templates, application tips, and interview guides (by industry).

How Do Students Access Forage?

Students can access Forage at https://www.theforage.com/.  They can also currently find this link in BoilerConnect, by clicking the “Student Resources” link on their BoilerConnect home screen.

During the month of April, Purdue students' accounts in Forage will be auto-created and they will receive a series of emails explaining how to claim their account and explore the Forage resources. This initiative ensures every student has the opportunity to engage with career-building experiences, regardless of their major or background.

Professional Licensure & FE Exam: What is it? When to take it? How to prepare?

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is typically the first step in the process leading to the P.E. license. It is designed for students close to finishing their engineering degree or recent graduates. The FE is a computer-based exam that is administered year-round at NCEES (National Council of Examiners for engineering and Surveying) approved Pearson VUE test centers. FYI – Purdue has an approved test site.  The FE contains 110 multiple-choice questions. The exam appointment time is 6 hours long, which includes a nondisclosure agreement, tutorial (8 minutes), the exam (5 hours and 20 minutes), a scheduled break (25 minutes), and a brief survey.

What is professional licensure all about and why is it important?  Learn more at https://www.nspe.org/sites/default/files/resources/pdfs/GR/2017handouts/2017%20-%20What%20is%20a%20PE%20document.pdf

The EEE website has an information and resource page - click here. This page highlights NCEES, the Environmental Exam, links to various sites to register for the FE, what study sessions are offered on campus (not all apply to EEE, though), how to purchase study guides, and other resources to consider.

EEE FE Exam Reimbursement Program for EEE Seniors

The EEE FE Exam Reimbursement Program is meant to encourage and support EEE students to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam during their time at Purdue. It offers 100% reimbursement with a passing score and 50% reimbursement for a failing score on the FE. Once the student takes the FE, they are to provide proof of their test date and score along with an itemized receipt to Dr. Robinson, nlrobins@purdue.edu. The deadline for a reimbursement request is the last day of the month in which the student graduates. Only one reimbursement per student will be allowed.
