City of West Lafayette Analysis of Current Recycling Practices

The City of West Lafayette offers single-stream recycling to its residents. However, due to contamination of recycled material and current market conditions, most “recycling” collected is disposed as waste. Across Indiana and the United States as a whole, many items put in recycling are ending up in landfills.

The objective of this project is to describe the current West Lafayette recycling system, its problems, and proposals for changes that introduce improvements.  The students will address the economics of the recycling program; its real effects on the environment and sustainability; and educational components. Serious reflection upon ending single-stream recycling will be included.

UPDATE
Contaminants found in recyclable materials are a key issue in America’s recycling business, and this is seen first-hand in West Lafayette. Due to contamination of recycled material and current market conditions, most recycling collected is disposed of as waste. This high contamination is economically problematic for both the city of West Lafayette and the recycling plant that sorts the materials. It is causing a major environmental issue as well as increasing landfill and ocean waste while decreasing usable recyclables.

Go Greener Recycling is analyzing several approaches to decrease contamination and increase usable recycling. These include: assessing the psychology of recycling and normative behavior, other country’s strategies/policies, and the potential incorporation of new technology. To allow the county to accrue profit to continue recycling with less deficit, we will also promote census participation
