Purdue fostered in me several important desires: to work at something that is very challenging, to do my best, and to give back. These qualities have fueled my interests over the years such that I feel I have added value to my clients, colleagues and employees.
Why did you choose to study electrical and computer engineering?
I started in physics but noticed that people with BSEE degrees were having an easy time finding jobs; that wasn't true for undergraduate degrees in physics. I always liked science and math, so EE also appealed.
Favorite Purdue ECE class or experience:
There were many! I loved digital logic design, solving logic problems, wiring breadboards, etc. I also liked semiconductor physics. Among other things, I talked about cooking with my professor, Dr. Leroy Silva; he taught me how to cut a flank steak (across the grain, for your information).
What organizations or activities were you involved in at Purdue (doesn’t have to be ECE-related)? What did you gain from that involvement?
I wrote a daily consumer-advocacy column for the Exponent, called Cuttin' Tape. In addition to providing a little income, having to write daily helped me learn to focus my thoughts and communicate clearly. That experience paid dividends over the years.
What are you doing currently?
I'm a patent attorney, so I work with both technology and law. After leaving Purdue, I was a semiconductor engineer at Texas Instruments for 8 years. During part of that time, I attended law school at night. I've been working in law for over 30 years.
What are your ultimate career goals?
To retire!
How is your Purdue degree helping you achieve your goals?

What advice do you have for current ECE students?
Learn how to write and speak clearly. Texting is not writing. If you can't communicate your ideas, and persuade others of their value, they can easily be lost.
What do you do in your free time? (hobbies, activities, interests, etc)
I cook, ski, read, workout and enjoy time with family - especially our four grandkids!
