The US News & World Report has released its national rankings of graduate programs for this year. The discipline rankings are based entirely on peer evaluations, whereas the college rankings are a combination of peer and recruiter assessments, along with a variety of performance-based factors. EE and CmpE both ranked #9 for 2018.

The College of Engineering moved to the #8 position, up from #9 last year. Seven disciplines rank in the top 10, and two disciplines – IE and MSE – moved up in the rankings. IE moved to a tie for the #6 position, up from a tie for #9 last year, and MSE moved to a 3-way tie for #14, up from a 4-way tie for #15 last year.

The tables below summarize this year’s and last year’s rankings and methodology. The discipline rankings are based entirely on peer evaluations, whereas the college rankings are a combination of peer and recruiter assessments, along with a variety of quantitative factors. The College's peer and recruiter scores remain the same as last year’s, but measures that have number-of-faculty in the denominator – in particular, research expenditures per faculty and PhD students per faculty – have slightly rebounded from last year’s drop that had been driven downward by the expansion hiring. The turnaround in these two measures is a promising sign that our collective faculty, including our newest faculty, are ramping up their research programs.
