ECE Group competes in Tattoo Challenge
A group of ECE students whose work is part of the VACCINE DHS Center competed in the NIST Tattoo Challenge, Tatt-C.
The National Institute for Standards and Technology, a part of the Commerce Department that has taken the lead on evaluating biometrics, organized a challenge in which groups faced off to see who could deliver software and algorithms that identified tattoos most accurately. The event, sponsored by the FBI's Biometric Center of Excellence, brought together researchers from academia and the private sector to test image recognition technology against five different scenarios.
The ECE group, led by Professor Edward Delp, finished second in Phase One, where the topic was tattoo identification. First place went to a commercial company. They also placed second in Phase Two in two topics, Tattoo Identification and Tattoo Region of Interest. First place again went to a commercial company. On June 8th NIST held a workshop for Tatt-C. Professor Delp presented a talk about the group's tattoo and graffiti work. The students in the group are Joonsoo Kim, He Li, and Jiaju Yueyue. This work was sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security.
