Students around the world can now learn the material of Prof. Comer's course on "Random Variables and Signals", thanks to the efforts of ECE graduate student Maliha Hossain. With Prof. Comer's permission, Hossain built an online version of the course based on the notes she took while attending the class. "It's been a tremendously helpful learning experience," said the native of Bangladesh, who is now completing her masters degree at Purdue. The idea of having students publish their own online version of the classes they take was first proposed by ECE professor Mimi Boutin. Boutin coined the term "slectures" to describe this new type of online learning, which encourages students to learn by teaching to their peers online. (Slecture is a combination of the word student and the word lecture.) "I think the greatest benefits of slectures is to the students who create them, as there is no better way to learn than to teach," says Boutin.
